Ric Flair wins his first of 16 World Heavyweight Championships from Dusty Rhodes at Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kansas: September 17, 1981

It’s been nearly 31 years since the NWA World Title changed hands in Kansas City. The last time was a memorable one: “Nature Boy” Ric Flair captured his first World Championship from “the American Dream” Dusty Rhodes.

In the 23-minute match, Flair weakened Rhodes’ legs with his signature figure-four leglock. Rhodes tried to suplex Flair, but his legs gave out and Lou Thesz made the count, giving Flair the win.

This weekend, the NWA’s 10 pounds of gold may change hands in Kansas City when Adam Pearce meets Colt Cabana as part of their best-of-seven series.
