Honky Tonk Man wins the Intercontinental Championship from Ricky “the Dragon” Steamboat: June 13, 1987
I was so disappointed when an Elvis impersonator defeated the Dragon just a few months after Steamboat’s triumph over “Macho Man” Randy Savage at WrestleMania III. Little did I know that Steamboat was taking time off for the birth of his son, Richie, and the New York office punished him by taking the title from him. However, I did think it was cool that Honky celebrated with all of the heels in the locker room.
Honky went on to be the longest reigning Intercontinental Champion. The Dragon went on to much greater things — his feud with “Nature Boy” Ric Flair and a NWA World Title run.
Today, WWE.com added Honky’s profile to its alumni section. Hopefully, we get an HD version of his title win instead of the grainy footage on Daily Motion.
