John Cena retains the WWE Championship at Vengeance: Nights of Champions: June 24, 2007
The first Night of Champions will always be seen as the event that Chris Benoit no-showed on the weekend of the double-murder suicide. Benoit was scheduled to wrestle CM Punk for the vacant ECW Championship. After claiming that he was taking care of his sick family and skipping that weekend’s house shows, Benoit flat out no-showed the pay-per-view. John Morrison filled in and won the ECW Title. The next day, the world learned of the killings.
What’s also noticeable about this card is how many guys are either a) dead (Umaga and Lance Cade) and b) out of the company (too many to name). There are just six guys left on the roster — John Cena, CM Punk, Randy Orton, Santino Marella, Mick Foley and Booker T — from this card, which was just five years ago.
Cena retained the WWE Championship in a five-pack challenge by pinning Foley. Also in the match: Booker, Orton and Bobby Lashley.
In the other main event match, Edge retained the World Heavyweight Championship by defeating Batista by count out.
Also on the card:
World Tag Team Champions Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch defeated Matt Hardy and Jeff Hardy.
Cruiserweight Champion Chavo Guerrero beat Jimmy Wang Yang.
Intercontinental Champion Santino Marella defeated Umaga by disqualification.
U.S. Champion MVP retained against “Nature Boy” Ric Flair.
WWE Tag Team Champions Deuce ‘n Domino (Cliff Compton) beat Sgt. Slaughter and “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka.
Candice Michelle won the Women’s Championships from Melina.
