Shawn Michaels successfully defends the WWF Championship against Vader at SummerSlam ‘96: August 18, 1996

The Showstopper and the Mastodon fought over the WWF Championship at the ‘96 summer classic. Vader kicked out of Sweet Chin Music and power bombed Michaels, who proved his resilience by kicking out. Vader dragged HBK to a corner and attempted a moonsault but crashed and burned when Michaels moved (and he didn’t have far to go). Michaels slowly climbed to the top and moonsaulted onto the Man Called Vader for the 1-2-3.

In a “Boiler Room Brawl,” “Mankind” Mick Foley defeated the Undertaker in their stiff series of matches. Paul Bearer, the Phenom’s long-time manager, turned his back on the Deadman and ‘Taker’s own urn was used to bludgeon him for the win. More brutality than we could imagine — Hell in a Cell — was yet to come.

Somehow, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin couldn’t get on the main card. The Rattlesnake defeated Yokozuna when the rope broke under the nearly-600-pound sumo’s weight. The match was one of Yoko’s last in the WWE.
